Happy New Year Beauties!
Now that 2016 is in the past, it is time to leave all the negative and toxic aspects of your life behind as well. Although it can be hard sometimes to start something new, now is the time to do it! Whether you change up your diet, hit the gym, focus on cleansing your skin, or cut down on caffeine and alcohol from the holidays, step-by-step these 5 changes will help improve your new year. Today I will give you some healthy detox options that are easy to follow and before you know it, you will love the new you!
#1: Read the Nutritional Labels
The first thing many people tend to focus on in the new year is changing up their diet to live a healthier life. I know it can be hard to say goodbye to old habits and comfort foods, but believe me, there are many healthy recipes you can find that are just as tasty and satisfying! Overall, if you want to feel better and livelier then it is best to cut out anything that is high in sugar, saturated fats, and empty carbohydrates.
Something that helps is to look at the serving size on the nutritional labels and then the quantities/percentages of the ingredients. That way you will really know how much to eat in one sitting based on your dietary goals. Another method that helps me is to listen to my body. Once I am full, I stop eating or I save some room for dessert. Even if I have food leftover on my plate, I do not continue to eat because this just leads to overeating and discomfort. Now, there are times that I do allow myself to overeat, but I do so consciously. The food is not going anywhere if you don’t eat it all in one sitting. Therefore, wastage is not an excuse! All you have to do is wrap it up and save it for later that day or the next day.
Chicken Zoodle Soup Recipe
Here in New York it’s pretty chilly so coming home to a hot bowl of Chicken Zoodle Soup is amazing. Yes, I said zoodle, because instead of putting traditional pasta noodles into your soup, you switch it out with zucchini noodles; they are delicious and still give you that noodle consistency. This recipe is low carb and only around 200 calories per bowl so you don’t have to worry about your waistline and it will keep you nice and warm during the upcoming winter months!
Ingredients: (this makes 6 servings & use organic ingredients if you can)
- 2 tbsp. olive oil
- 1 cup diced onions
- 1 cup diced celery
- 3 cloves of minced garlic
- 5 cans of low sodium chicken broth
- 1 cup sliced carrots
- 3/4 pound cooked chicken breast (cut up)
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
- Salt and pepper
- 3 zucchini squash cut into noodles (using a spiral slicer or vegetable peeler)
How to Make It: (Takes about 45 minutes)
- First, heat the olive oil in a bowl over medium heat and sauté the onion, celery and garlic in the oil for about 5 minutes until they are tender.
- Next, pour the chicken broth into the pot and then add the carrots, chicken, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Now you need to bring the broth to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let simmer for about 20 minutes.
- Lastly, divide the zucchini noodles between six soup bowls and ladle the broth over the noodles. Enjoy!
#2 Sweat it Out
If you feel like getting back into the gym it is best to start off slow, never rush into anything or else you could end up hurting yourself. Whether you prefer taking group classes, hardcore workouts, or yoga, working out is a great way to release endorphins and feel fantastic. Also, sweating helps release toxins that are trapped in your body. I will start you off with a beginner workout that you can complete in your own time at home, making it super easy and giving you zero excuses to not workout!
What you need:
- A set of light weights (depends on what you are comfortable with)
- A timer (you can use your phone)
The Exercise Routine:
- Side Lying Leg Lifts (15 reps on each leg)
- Body Weight Squat (15 reps)
- Knee Pushups (15 reps)
- Hammer Curls (15 reps)
- Crunches (30 reps)
Do this set and rest a minute in-between each round. Try to complete up to 3 rounds. Keep this routine up about 3 to 4 times a week and you’ll start to feel great!
#3 Cleanse Your Skin
Many people tend to only focus on what they are putting in their bodies, while not focusing on what they put on their bodies. This year I encourage you to cleanse your skin by going through and reading the ingredients in your current skincare, makeup and body products. By tossing out a few products and switching them for safer and healthier options, you will be reducing your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and toxins.

#4 Cut Back on Drinking
Now that the holidays are over, you might be feeling a bit bloated and beaten down from all of the drinking. This is because alcohol dehydrates your body and deprives the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients. I am not saying to completely cut drinking out of your life, however, limiting your alcohol intake can improve your physical and mental health tremendously. So instead of going out and getting a few cocktails, try a nice glass of wine, as they are usually around 100-150 calories per glass. Ultimately, it really comes down to your own preferences when it comes to alcohol; so it is completely okay to enjoy a glass here and there, but by cutting down your alcohol intake you’ll definitely feel lighter and livelier.
#5 Drink More Water
Lastly, just drink more water! Not only is water a hundred percent pure, it can help improve your body both inside and out. It can improve your mood and it helps release toxins that are just sitting in your body. Water can clear up your skin and hydrate it as well! If one of your new year resolutions is weight loss, then water is the go-to drink for you as it carries no calories or unwanted toxins that an energy drink or detox drink can contain. Try to drink around 8 cups of water a day and although you may need to use the restroom more often, you’ll be left feeling hydrated and radiant!
