Life is back in full swing now that we are nearing the end of January. This means you can be busy beyond belief, which can do some damage to your skin if you don’t take the time to exfoliate it. With everything that happens on a day-to-day basis, your pores can become clogged with sweat, dirt, and dead skin cells.
By exfoliating at the end of a work filled day you are clearing your skin of those old dead skin cells and exposing fresh new skin that is hiding underneath. The best part about exfoliating your skin properly is that once your skin is stripped of all the dead skin cells it opens your pores up to allow your toner and moisturizer to sink more deeply into your skin. This will further help fight against any impurities that may lie on the surface of the skin and leave it soft and glowing due to increased blood circulation after exfoliation.
So, how often should you exfoliate?
This really depends on your skin type. If you are like me and have sensitive skin it is best to exfoliate about twice a week. If you find that it’s still too harsh on your skin, then lower your exfoliating routine to once a week to keep your skin clear and healthy without irritating it. On the other hand, if your skin tends to be more oily then it is definitely safe to exfoliate two times a week or more if you find it helpful due to the excess oil clogging your pores more frequently.
What can you do to exfoliate your skin?
If you are looking for an easy DIY exfoliating facial scrub then all you need is some baking soda, which is an ingredient that is filled with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Also some water, which is easy to obtain and free! Lastly, if you would like, add some honey into the mixture for its antibacterial properties.
- 1/2 tsp. of baking soda
- enough water to thin the paste
- 1/2 tsp. of honey (optional)
What to do:
- Mix all the ingredients together until it forms a thin paste.
- Apply to face and rub in circular motions.
- If you’d like, you can let the mixture sit on your skin for about 5 minutes to really sink in.
- Rinse your face off with warm water or use a cloth if you’d prefer.
- Finish off this exfoliating facial scrub with your daily skin care routine (i.e. toner, moisturizer)
As an extra gentle exfoliation solution for sensitive skin, try plain unsweetened yogurt or milk. The lactic acid in yogurt and milk is a wonderful yet gentle natural exfoliator that helps dissolve dead skin cells and promotes clearer skin.
